What is Internal Family Systems?

IFS is a powerful and scientifically based form of psychotherapy, developed by Richard Schwartz. IFS assumes an 'inner system' with one Self and countless inner parts, each with their own thoughts, emotions and roles. All your parts have positive intentions. Only it can happen that some parts get stuck in protective roles, such as perfectionism, pleasing, rationalizing, self-criticism, addiction or overeating, because they are burdened with pain and conditioning from the past.


Through IFS Therapy, you learn to approach all your inner parts with curiosity and compassion, instead of judgment. When you do that, something special happens: the parts that carry burdens feel safe and understood, which allows them to let go of their protective roles. They dare to trust that your inner essence - what in IFS is called the Self - is taking the lead. You can think of the Self as the conductor and your inner parts as the members of the orchestra: when the conductor takes the lead from a place of calm, curiosity, compassion, trust, courage and clarity, balance is created and the orchestra plays together in harmony.


What makes IFS so revolutionary is that it is completely guided by your own inner experience. There is no work with diagnoses, labels or disorders that need to be 'fixed'. Using IFS techniques, you are guided to get to know your inner world and heal it from within, restoring balance and inner harmony. What does an IFS trajectory look like?

  1. Getting to know each other and setting goals

    During the first session we get to know each other and explore your situation and request for help. We discuss what you want to achieve with IFS and set goals together.

  2. Meet your inner parts

    Then we go on a discovery. I guide you in recognizing and learning to understand your different parts. We investigate which parts require the most attention and which parts hold you in protective patterns.

  3. Deep work and healing

    In follow-up sessions we use IFS techniques to free these parts from the burden they carry, to heal them and to connect them with each other. This creates more harmony in your inner system.

  4. Integration and completion

    As the journey progresses, you integrate the insights and changes into your daily life. We regularly evaluate how you feel and what you need. Ultimately, we conclude the journey when you have achieved your desired transformation.

Gaining insight into your inner parts is extremely effective in breaking patterns and letting go of fear, so that more space is created to be yourself and shape your own life from a place of peace and confidence.

 

In addition to working with inner parts, I use Mindfulness and Nonviolent Communication techniques. Mindfulness helps you to be more present in the moment and to make conscious choices, even in challenging situations. Nonviolent Communication is a powerful tool to be more connected to yourself and others, by better understanding and expressing feelings and needs.
